First Breakfast for 2010
Business Recovery, Surviving a Crisis
Victorian businessman and bushfire survivor speaks at Pittwater Business Breakfast
173 lives were lost in the devastating 2009 Victorian bushfires, most of them on Black Saturday, February 7.
The Brumby Government, Bendigo and Adelaide Bank and its charitable arm, the Community Enterprise Foundation joined forces to set up a $4 million fund to help rebuild community infrastructure and promptly provide jobs in Victoria’s bushfire-affected areas.
Barry Henwood, Chairman of Valley Community Financial Services Limited, will be guest speaker at the Pittwater Business Limited breakfast to be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2010. His topic: “Business Recovery, Surviving a Crisis” will outline his experiences in the 12 months since the devastating fires. NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons will also address the gathering.
Valley Community Financial Services Limited operates the Hurstbridge & Districts and Diamond Creek Community Bank branches. Since the fires the company has been providing ongoing financial support to its local CFA, donating thousands of dollars in branch profits to the firefighters who protect Kinglake, St Andrews, Strathewan, Hurstbridge and Diamond Creek – towns that were hardest hit by last February’s bushfires.
Several board members and staff of the bank branches were directly affected by the fires. “This has been a devastating experience. People in our immediate banking family have lost homes, livelihoods, even their lives. We lost many customers and friends,” said Mr Henwood.
In this year’s Australia Day honours, Barry Henwood was announced as 2010 Nillumbik Citizen of the Year in recognition of his services to the community.
